#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: The full moon guided them. Clint urged Bowie across a shallow creek leading to a meadow surrounded by hills. Emily refrained from asking questions. “Close your eyes,” Clint said. “I want to surprise you. I guarantee this will take your breath away.”
CleanWIP Magazine is sneaking a peek inside a recently released historical romance by Scott R. Rezer, The Haberdasher’s Wife… “Josefa, please, go and get some air. Take a walk to clear your mind,” Michelina said. Josefa glanced toward her sleeping mother. Her chest rose with a shallow breath. “I… I don’t want to leave Mother alone. Not now; not with her so close to the end.”
He eyed the #shallow hole. Freshly dug. With all the grass, nearly missed it. It was an odd size. And just large enough for someone to break an ankle on. Scanning the ground in front of him. He spotted an identical hole. He wondered what or who put them in the trail. #CleanWIP
Wiping his eyes on his sleeve, he tried to feel different. He tried to detect anything other than the frightening echoing emptiness inside. What had it been like, four years ago, to know that he wasn’t alone? To feel it, deep down, and know he had purpose? #CleanWIP Deep
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Emily took a deep breath and strained to hear the conversation between the dentist and Mrs. Payne. “I guess you heard about my sham of a wedding,” Clemons croaked. If this was his normal voice, Mrs. Payne was right. He did sound like a sick bullfrog.
#cleanwip SWEETHEARTS NEW – A mix of fear and anger roiled up in her, but she took a deep breath which calmed her enough to be rational again. The crew made a mistake, that’s all. One or the other of us is in the wrong place. #sweetromance#readingcommunity#comingsoon
He came to the curved edge of the dome. He peered into the sea, watching the fish in the deeper part of the reef that bordered his home. Some, like him, were poking around to find food. Others were doing something he could not. They were playing. #CleanWIP (deep) #fantasy
The parrot smelled the coffee and quickly landed at Gimpys’ feet for its morning treat. Gimpy decided to go for a run. Inspired by Nicky, he could still see her elegant stride as she ran on the beach. He stretched to loosen up. The old bird squawked like it was funny. #CleanWip
#CleanWIP (theme INSPIRE) He couldn’t afford to lose control now. What would his father want to know first? “Is the Keep secured?” “Aye, Sire.” Kieran smiled grimly. “The people found their courage. Your father inspired them, even in his final moments.”
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: “Encourage Landon to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor,” Emily said. The separation would be a good test to see if their love is real, or mere infatuation.” “Love?” Clint growled. “What do those kids know about the responsibilities that go with it?
Katherine took a deep breath, proud her voice only quivered once. “Yes. If it prevents a war, I’ll do it.” “Your courage is inspiring,” King Phillip said. “May we all take a part of it with us. Maledonia will be here by morning.”#CleanWIP Theme: Inspire

#CleanWIP Her younger son Arthur, who was five and a well-mannered boy, pushed past her and stared up at Tristam, still riding on Bennet’s shoulders. He bowed and then forgot everyone except Tristam. “Hello, Tris! Will you play knights with me?”
Today’s #CleanWIP theme and collaborative article is Introduce. [More info]
The #CleanWIP theme for Wednesday, June 24, 2020 is INTRODUCE. In addition to relevant lines from a *clean* WIP, we’re encouraging authors who market their works in this way to use #CleanWIP to introduce themselves or a favorite character to our readers. (Links encouraged.) pic.twitter.com/PBykbhdpbh
@cleanwip Informal introductions: “Later, Doc.” She grimaced back at his scowl. “What? It’s not like I know your name.” He grudgingly said, “Grant.” “Harmony.” “Yes, I heard.” “So you did.” Pivoting, Harmony opened her car door. “Welcome to Cadmia, Grant.” #WIP
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: She didn’t trust him. Clint couldn’t fault her. She was a pretty, young woman and he was a stranger. She must have thought him trustworthy or she wouldn’t have accepted a ride. But, she had also ignored his suggestion that they introduce themselves.
#CleanWIP “Papa, what is that?” The boy pointed to the silver tube. Kieran grimaced, having planned to introduce the concept to Bennet more gently. “Sommat tae help Bennet, me lad. I may have need o’ your Healing gift.”
Can’t forget to #introduce Liam in my #cleanwip posts! “What are you doing here?” That voice grated in her nerves the moment she heard it…her brain reeled so much from finding a shirtless intruder in her suite she found it difficult to figure out why. https://t.co/U6R86QcEAl
“You must act with Shizen—without pretense. The audience must forget you are acting. They must feel the dirt itching at the farmer’s neck and rough woven cloth sticking to his sweating back. You cannot do this if…”
#CleanWIP (theme THORN) Dougal at last reached the opening, screened from casual view by thick thorny brush. He sidled past the offensive plants until he could peer around a cluster of boulders. No pursuit, at least not yet.
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Alissia had false notions about her and Clint. Why did he despise mail-order brides? Curiosity got the best of Emily. “I get the feeling mail-order brides are a thorn in your brother’s flesh. Can you tell me why? Alissia’s eyes dulled. “Ma was one.”
Marissa schooled her features into a look that said she meant business. “Cruises to Alaska are seasonal. The best they could do was transfer our reservations into someone else’s name.” “I don’t understand that. Didn’t you get travel insurance?”#cleanwip#amwriting#sweetromance
#CleanWIP#amWriting ~ After school, I’d usually help out around the shop. Lisa taught me the business side of running an auto repair shop and Dave taught me to get my hands dirty. Once I proved myself, I formally asked for a job.
Gimpy stared at the white sand and the crystal blue waters in the Gulf. He had to hit the water. The sting of saltwater in his eyes gave him pause, and then a wave knocked him down; that got his attention. The ocean made him come alive, and yet, made him feel small. #CleanWip
A loud crackling sound echoed through the kitchen. Inessa Jo paused and listened to the sound for a moment. Her heart rate quickened. Tension seized her spine. As quick as it had started. It stopped. Taking the power with it. The house went dark. #CleanWIP
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Adella gave Emily a sly grin at the slip of his given name. “I suppose Alissia has started back to school. That leaves you and Clint alone, to care for Vera.” Adella’s pause on “alone” was not lost on Emily. The woman’s insinuations infuriated her.
~ a fun excerpt from author Jessica Marie Holt ~ “I have a girlfriend,” Julio blurted out. He groaned internally. So much for letting Olivia off the hook. His mother stood up so fast her chair fell over. Lela came and picked it up. Then she looked at all of them, her eyes glinting with curiosity. “Que pasa aqui?” she said. Julio’s mother translated the news. Lela’s eyes opened wide and round. She clutched one hand to her chest, while the other hovered in the air as though she was casting a spell. Then she closed her eyes and began murmuring thanks and praises to her dear Lord and Savior for allowing her to live to see this blessed day. Then she opened one eye and fixed it on Julio. “Es rubia?” “Si, Lela. She’s blonde. Es rubia.” Lela clutched her chest again and sat down heavily in the chair Julio’s mother had vacated.

What on earth would have possessed Marissa to think that Cassie should have a fling with Liam Harris? The man repulsed her on every level. Well, not every level. If he didn’t open his mouth, she could enjoy just looking at him.
I just finished reading Joy’s Sorrow by @KatyHuthJones. Beautiful tale showing the real joys and trials of life on the intimate level of family and the broad scale of a nation. Not a happily ever after, but a truly joyful story.https://t.co/vzSnfnBQRo
Oily gunk clung to his jeans and stained his hands. The scent of motor oil took over the space to the point that he could taste it. Piece by piece he helped Nik fix the engine. In silence they worked. Checking over each metal part as they replaced them.#CleanWIP (Theme: Reset)
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Emily laid her mother’s three slightly worn dresses in the trunk. She’d altered them to fit and brought them up to fashion. She was grateful for the treadle sewing machine. If money hadn’t been scarce, she’d have made clothes for both Roy and Louise.
Wrinkling her nose, June took out the final lasagna–a sad, flaccid vegetable concoction Ellie had made that really wasn’t worthy to be carried by June’s pretty floral oven mitts. She sighed and set it on the stove, as well. #CleanWIP
#CleanWIP (theme SET) The flowery language of the hard-to-read script was giving Dolan a headache. He leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temples. “Do ye need to set it aside, Sire? I’d hate for this important document to cause one or both o’ us to expire from boredom.”
#CleanWIP (theme FILL) “You will never be old.” She leaned against his shoulder, and he put his arm around her. “Your heart will ever be young.” “‘Tis because you and our bairns fill my heart to bursting.” He kissed her head.
“So, how much did Julio pay you to go out with him?” Olivia froze, her heart pounding. “Oye, Tio, que te pasa?” said Julio with a pained expression. Raul’s big, booming laugh filled up the room. “I’m sorry, Olivia. I just like to mess with my nephew. He deserves it.” #CleanWIP
Singing mixed with the smell of something savory cooking filled the room. Torian stood from the table, did a quick stretch. The empty hollow in his stomach reminded him that he had not eaten since breakfast. He checked his watch. Ten minutes until six. #CleanWIP
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: “Will you fill this order, Mrs. Payne? I’m on a crutch, and I want to have it read when Mr. McCall returns. And add a sack of flour to Mr. McCall’s account. Mrs. Reilly asked us to pick one up.” “That’s the only way she’ll get it,” Mrs. Payne groused.
A carved lion mask snarled. His nose wrinkled and his teeth overlapping the edges of his hungry grin. Red covered his skin while carved golden swirls curved along his jaw and over his eyes. Each line vibrated with frozen movement. #cleanWIP (move) #vss365
#CleanWIP (theme MOVE) “We could build a place o’ our own near the Keep, or live in the Highlands, or move wherever we had a wish to.” Kieran shifted Fiona and lifted her over his head, to her delight. “Och, lass, ye are getting too big for me tae swing ye about.”
There she was. Tucked into her usual spot. The #carrel covered with books. Intently she poured over the pages. Absent mindedly taking notes. Standing to #move toward her. To introduce himself. Their eyes locked. She smiled. He nodded. Gathered his stuff. And left #vss365#CleanWIP
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Wolf whistles from unkempt men outside the saloon, pierced the air as their wagon passed. Some spat tobacco and leered at Emily. The cowboy slapped the reins to get the horses moving faster. “Don’t pay them any mind. They get rowdy this time of day.”
#CleanWIP theme: MOVE: I began shaking uncontrollably as the awareness of my surroundings returned. Moments later we were joined by several station officials. One offered his hand to me as he said, “Ms. Foster, I’m Scott Atkinson, the station manager. Please come with me.”
Today’s #CleanWIP theme and collaborative article is Lift. [More info]
Lift off! — STS064-S-051 (9 Sept. 1994) — With a crew of six NASA astronauts aboard, the space shuttle Discovery heads for its nineteenth Earth-orbital mission. Launch was delayed because of weather, but all systems were “go,” and the spacecraft left the launch pad at 6:23 p.m. (EDT) on Sept. 9, 1994. Onboard were astronauts Richard N. Richards, L. Blaine Hammond, Carl J. Meade, Mark C. Lee, Susan J. Helms and Jerry M. Linenger. Photo courtesy of NASA
As Gimpy walked in, he moved slowly. Close to camp, he spotted a bird. A parrot, like in the flashy brochure inviting you to the islands, but this old bird didn’t have the perfect colors. It’d never make the cut, but it didn’t matter, it gave his spirit a lift. #SunWip#CleanWip
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Using the crutch, Emily kept up. When they reached the wagon, Clint set the basket in the back and lifted her to the wagon seat. His fingers almost met around her tiny waist. Did she eat enough? Last night, she’d devoured supper like a starving dog.
Ichia #lifted her face and looked into mine. A flicker sparked in her soft sad eyes. “I'll know when you are free of the curse. You'll feel different. When that happens, then I will trust you."#cleanWIP#vss365

#CleanWIP Patrick pulled out his pocket watch for the third time. The stage was always late. If his bride was half what he’d asked for, she’d be an answer to prayer. He needed a calm, serious woman to keep an orderly house, cook delicious meals, and care for three-year old Abby.
One of his favorite things to do was go out to clubs. Not to pick up women, as everyone assumed. And not to jump up and down like an idiot to weird techno music, like a lot of his friends. To dance. To find that magic again. He had always been unsuccessful–until now. #CleanWIP
Inessa Jo took a deep breath, perhaps it was a sign that the guest apartment was rented out the same day that she quit her job. Perhaps it was Gods way of looking out for her, telling her that she had made the right move with walking away from a well payed position. #CleanWIP
Wind whispered over the new snow, only marred by the star prints of bird tracks ahead and the double lines of my sandal prints behind. It was only a day’s #walk to the silk-maker. I knew the way. That was not the path I followed.#cleanWIP#vss365
Alice's fingers curled around the knife hidden in her pocket as she #walked behind Selena. A group of royal guards passed through the corridor. What was she thinking? She was just one young woman fighting for freedom in the most powerful empire in the world.
#CleanWIP ~ I listened but heard nothing. Spirits completely deflated now, I continued to speak aloud, albeit softly, to no one. “I hate when you walk out and slam the door while I’m talking to you. Maybe someday you’ll realize I’m only trying to help. Maybe someday you’ll…
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: She wouldn’t have answered the ad if there was any other way out of her dilemma. Louise made it clear Emily was to get out after graduation. Since, the nagging had increased. “It’s high time we did somethin’” Louise’s voice blasted through the screen.
Timothy had not thought about William all day, and the realization left him feeling oddly empty. William relied on him, as all characters did, to give him life—but Timothy had been too busy chasing thalers to spare a thought for imaginary orphan children. #CleanWIP Imagine
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Mrs. Payne wagged a finger. “Why Ollie placed an ad, I can’t understand. With the money his family has, he could have his pick of any young lady in Abilene. I can’t imagine why any girl wouldn’t want to marry a dentist.” Emily coughed to cover a laugh.
“They’ll love you. You’re exactly what they imagine for me.” “But I’m not what you imagine for yourself.” Julio’s face felt hot. He squirmed in his seat. “Well, not exactly.” She nodded and took another sip of her Sprite. “Don’t worry, you’re not my type either.” #CleanWIP

#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Pot lids banged. Louise was displaying her temper. “I never said that! But there’s got to be a way to get your sister out of here. If she just had a job to pay for her upkeep… Em’ly’s been graduated three months, and what’s she got to show for it?”
Out to sea, Gimpy picked up a dolphin escort, seven of them, and they were wide open and graceful. As he approached the island, he slowed to an idle, and #just took in the beauty of the place. Easing the boat into the cove, he tied up at the dock. He felt at home. #CleanWip
Ichia knelt by the fire, humming, as she embroidered a little silk kimono, #just the right size for a baby. A white crane stood under a pine, near a pool. She had half finished a green turtle. Both symbols of long life. Life that neither of my brothers had had.#cleanWIP#vss365

I pray about everything: from my weight, to breakouts, to plumbing needs around my flat, my weekly budget, to songs to sing during worship. I even confess when I am jealous or angry or afraid…it’s the only way I know how to live because it’s the only way that has worked for me.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.
Friends, don’t be afraid to talk about happy things, even though the world is crazy and talking about anything else seems irresponsible right now. I don’t mean to minimize what’s going on, but even in the darkness there’s hope. It isn’t healthy to dwell only on what’s wrong.
Whether [the local diner] intended the atmosphere to extend to “vintage odors” was unknown, but a wave of heavy, oniony air pushed its way out the door as Grace let herself in. It was like trying to breathe through a mask made of old onion rings.#amwriting
Her usual bohemian attire was replaced with jeans and a plain black tee. Work gloves sticking out of her back pocket. Marching across the farmyard. The chill in the breeze matched the look on her face. Something was terribly wrong. #CleanWIP
“Thanks.” Their fingers brushed when she accepted the mug, standing the hairs up on the back of her neck, but he didn’t seem to notice. As usual. Taking a cautious sip, she smiled. “#Hotchocolate is perfect on a day like this.”#CleanWIP

“June asked me to meet her here. She and Ellie have a proposition for me.” “Interesting. That’s not usually how they work. The two of them must have something up their sleeve.” She grinned. “Best of luck to you, Olivia.” Olivia scrunched up her nose. “Thanks?” #CleanWIP

“Shisei!” Mother’s voice carried through the delicate shoji walls of our home. Her #usual soft voice was sharpened to a pearl-diver’s knife edge.
I dropped my ax against a pile of yet to be cut firewood and ran to the house, crushing early spring ferns.#cleanWIP#vss365
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: JULY release. Thirty minutes later, the dentist still hadn’t arrived. Emily fought panic. He probably had to perform a procedure that took longer than usual. His patient might have become nauseous and vomitted. At least she didn’t have to clean it up.

An unmasked actor trudged onto the stage, wearing a farmer's kimono and carrying a market basket. Behind him walked in whispering steps a white robed and faced actor. A smile tugged at my mouth. The mid-performance interlude was always my #favorite part. #cleanWIP#vss365
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: Emily could kick herself for giving the station master her name and disclosing she was waiting for Dr. Clemons. Mama had warned her about revealing too much to strangers. Her favorite saying was, “The less folks know about your business, the better.”
He stood. Ankles crossed, leaning against the door frame. A concerned look on his face. Blue eyes casting her a questioning glare, demanding an answer to his string of unasked questions she knew were coming. She looked away, not ready to have this conversation with him. #CleanWIP
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride: “I didn’t hear a thing, Son.” “I heard a hog snort,” the younger Clemons asserted. “If Stiles has parked his hog wagon in front of our office, I’ll demand he move it.” Emily flattened herself against the wall as footsteps clomped out to the boardwalk.
#CleanWIP theme: #request … That did not stop me from saying “yes” when asked if I’d accompany him to the rodeo to watch his sister’s first public barrel race. Even if I wasn’t checking him out already, the sweetness of his gesture would have been tough to decline. pic.twitter.com/ZK2kScOSVV
#CleanWIP Half-Price Bride. “I’ll take a look at your foot," Doc said. "Clint, get her settled in a chair. Then leave.” “As you request, Doc, but, so you know, I’ve already seen her ankles and more.” Emily's cheeks flamed. Doc coughed to hide a chuckle. “Pay him no mind, Miss.”
